Trip Report - Sunday, May 10

Postby Cindy J on Sun May 10, 2009 10:54 pm

Once again we went back to the Park. Weather was beautiful!! Altho' it did snow on us in the Lamar Valley. OK - you could count the snow flakes but it was still snow.

Along the Madison we come upon bison on both sides of the road. My side he's standing right by the car so I have to take pictures past Don out his window. But there's a cute little baby and boy is he having a fun Sunday morning!! Running and kicking up his heels and circling Mom.

But you know there always has to be someone who isn't in as good as mood as you are.

And for this poor little guy it had to be in his herd.

Image

Now is that mean or what??!! I was totally unprepared for getting a picture of it and was really surprised that I even had that one. Someone woke up on the wrong side of the river or something. But the little one seemed to be OK.

Image

At South Twin Lake we caught this guy - someone said he's the one with the quills in his paw and he sure didn't move much or stand on it. Just stayed laying down along the edge - of course where you couldn't see him - digging around.

Image

On to Mammoth and up to Gardiner to check that we weren't missing anything. Found another little one along the Gardner River - his herd seemed to be in better humor.

Image

Cruised slow thru the "No Stopping" zone for the wolves and spotted some elk on watch and got lucky and spotted this wolf.

Image

Glad I took the shot!! I love it when they're black and easy to spot!!! But we have lots more dots to go before we're thru with this Trip Report!!

Way on over to Tower with nothing to see so we turned around - looked down in the canyon - checked the Osprey nest and coming back by Rainey (sp?) Lake there was a Black Bear!!

Image

Just into Little America we stopped to take pictures of the Pronghorn and here a lady spotted a Grizzly Bear DOT way, way, way off.

Image

Yup! Right there in the center. We did better just into the Lamar Valley - every pullout had someone in it so we knew there must be something to see. And right there in front of us at the second pullout we had another Grizzly.

Image

But no one was paying any attention to him. Here there was a wolf DOT way, way, way over there! So we got in the car and drove down further to be across from the DOT.

Image

Yes, above the bison right in the center of the picture again.

All the way to Pebble Creek, made the turn around, back to Tower and then headed to Mammoth. Here as we made the curve - just past Petrified Tree - as you pass Elk Creek - all that deadfall down to your right -- got the area in your head??

Another Black Bear!

Image

He was real cooperative - I'll save some of those for Bear Friday.

And we're finally headed home - Don and I are both tired. I didn't sleep and my eyes are KILLING me. No wolves to spot at Mammoth. No Bear at Twin Lakes. Bison and Elk all along the Madison as we head to West Yellowstone and we're past the Eagles nest and here the cars are stopped. They're looking way, way, way over there - at a Black Bear.

Image

I've made this spotting so easy for you guys by centering them. You're Welcome!! He didn't stay out long where you could see him so we got in the car and headed home. And now it's almost 11 pm and I'm outta here!!

Thanks for reading!!

Outstanding day, Cindy. Those bison are usually so protective, that guy is certainly a grump. Watching the red doggies scramble and play is Spring in Yellowstone for me. :D

Black bears, griz, wolves you saw it all, GREAT report...

Yes, really appreciate centering of all the dots. :) So much better than in person, where I know you had to start with "see that tree on the second ridge that is leaning to the left...no, that's not it...okay, see the big rock with the white spot in the middle, now go down a ways and to the right..." Looks like you had a really good, critter filled day! Any word on Miss Rosie yet?

I just love to watch them little red doggies prance around. Glad this little guy was okay.

Thanks for your account. It's almost like being there. I have gone a week and not seen as many animals as you did.

Had to get back on and re-read my Trip Report - I woke up at 3 am Sunday morning - was a 20 hour day for me by the time I got the pictures (1100 of them!!) downloaded to the computer, picked the ones I wanted to use, downloaded to Photobucket and wrote the report. I hate 20 hour days!! But I have my triple shot iced mocha with me now and I see it all made sense.

No word on Rosie. But it was really quiet down to Tower. We cruised thru real slow, stopped at a couple of the pullouts and turned around at the Tower parking lot. There were only about a half dozen cars in the parking lot, the pullouts were empty except for the Overlook where there was one car and I bet there were only a dozen of us watching the Black Bear at Rainey Lake.

And I HATE giving directions to see the DOTs!! I even HATE it when Don asks me!!!! I think I give pretty good directions but if I know where the DOT is I try to look invisible so I don't have to explain it!! The guy at Hellroaring Overlook had his scope trained on the den site and we asked him "where" and he said "If trees could look like a tornado . . ." - and that's what they looked like! Not those fat, squatty, mile wide ones - the skinny, "S" shaped ones.

Thanks for the tip Cindy, I'm sure I'll be able to go there and find the den site with that description  :? :?

Cindy -- great report and photos ... I know the "other side of the car thing"!! It's RICK ... PULL OVER ... STOP ... NOW ... ROLL DOWN THE **** WINDOW ... LEAN BACK ........ Okay, you didn't stop soon enough -- I'll try for it next time!!!  Actually, he does "respond quickly", doesn't always want to but does (because he loves me!!!!) Glad yours did too and you got neat shots!! And I love your "dots" ...after all, you have dots and some folks just have empty pages!! :D !
