Trip Report June 19 thru July 1 - Day 6

The last time that we were in Montana, we traveled from Sula to Yellowstone via Ennis. The stop in Ennis was planned, which is to say that my father would not cross the state of Montana without going to Ennis for breakfast at Yesterday's Soda Fountain. I have to admit, they have a damned fine breakfast.

So, on the morning of Day 6, we got up early and drove from Island Park to Ennis for breakfast. Let me just say that it is worth the trip!! If you go, be sure to order the chicken fried steak and get an Indian Flat Bread (aka Scone). The scone has sugar and cinnamon and a big scoop of honey butter. (If there are only two of you, just order it all to share - it is WAAAY too much for one person unless of course, that person is my husband, who ate the whole thing!)
I just had a scone!

After breakfast we did a little shopping in Ennis (maybe an hour's worth - I am not a big shopper - plus Yellowstone was calling!) We then headed over to Quake Lake and checked out the visitor center. It was not open the last time that we were there (in fall of 2007). If you are there, and it is open, do stop in. They have a great video about the 1959 Earthquake and the aftermath of that quake. It is very interesting. Oh, and go downstairs to see the wildlife display.

After spending an hour or so there, we headed back into Yellowstone. On our way into the park, we spied the Eagle in a tree just beside the nest.

We headed up to Mammoth to see what we could find. Still no sign of the Fab 5. I know they were there, hidden from view, laughing as we drove by.......

We saw a cinnamon black bear high on a hill and moving up fast. I managed to get a few shots, but really none worth sharing. But I was happy just to see him!

In Mammoth we found elk, lots of elk. Some were willing to pose for a photo...

After spending the entire afternoon in the park we headed back to the cabin, had some cold ones, and cooked steak on the barbeque. Another splendid day in paradise!

Terrific pictures. Once upon a time I Googled the Yellowstone Earthquake of 1959 and found a long article about it. What a great story in heroism. Anyone who is interested in the history of Yellowstone should read it. The pictures are amazing. Even more amazing is the bravery of every day, ordinary men and women.
