A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999 version),
Fight Club,
Lord of the Rings trilogy,
Elizabeth.

Great thread. And I see that my top two favorite movies are not on anyone else's list:

The Princess Bride
Matrix

As to the remaining top five, it is actually a tie between four movies:

The Man From Snowy River
Star Wars
October Sky
Lord of the Rings trilogy

Honorable Mentions

Oh Brother Where Art Thou
Shawshank Redemption

And my favorite TV series, by a long shot:

X-Files

Narrowing it down to 5:
The Ghost in the Darkness
Legends of the Fall
A River Runs Through It
Taking Chance
Saving Private Ryan

Suprised to see 'Taking Chance' here since no one seems to know about it (real sleeper), this is definately in my top five. If you guys have not seen it, would highly recommend putting it on your list of movies to see. Although it may be hard for those of you that have loved ones in Iraq and/or Afganistan.

My top five (this is hard.

1. Taking Chance
2. The Princess Bride (good one Bruce)
3. Dances With Wolves
4. The Green Mile
5. Shawshank Redemption

They almost made it to my list, but I like Fight Club and La Femme Nikita better. Star Wars set plus Clone Wars animated shorts also got bumped.

The List of Adrian Messenger
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Spanish Prisoner
The Last of the Dog Soldiers
October Sky (Rocket Boys)

An interesting window into our souls, with these lists, huh?

I am sorta big on team development metaphor movies so honorable mentions:
Remember The Titans
Hoosiers

And not one Annette and Paul movie or even an Elvis flick or any thematic movie with Sidney Poitier?

I just recalled a real biggie for me, "Slumdog Millionaire"

I had a nephew in Iraq when this came out, he came home the 5th of October, but it was hard to watch. I have never cried so hard all the way through a movie like I did with this one. Everyone should see this.
As for my honorable mentions, I should add a few comedies:
Young Frankenstein
Something about Mary
And Jackass 1 & 2
Yellowstone is a state of mind!!

I'm just reading this thread for the first time and couldn't believe there was no mention of The Princess Bride until Bruce brought it up. It's definitely in my top five. It's also a rare example of a case in which I prefer the movie over the book. The book has a bit more backstory on characters but the movie, nonetheless, has more character. I tried for years, to no avail, to get my husband to watch it. He had prejudged it to be a "chick flick" and was not interested. Then he heard his brother and other buddies quoting lines and when he admitted to them he'd never seen it and that I'd been trying to fix that they told him he needed to go home and watch it that night.

Others that come to mind, though maybe not really "top five." I have a hard time picking "top five" anything. So much depends on mood...

LOTR (books are better but those are, nonetheless, well made movies)

and a few that haven't been mentioned yet...
The Neverending Story (very different from book)
It's a Wonderful Life

To these I'd have to add Monty Python's
Holy Grail,
Meaning of Life, &
Life of Brian

And Katie,
I would have to admit that before seeing it I had the overall feeling that The Princess Bride was a chick flick too. My wife introduced me about 2 years ago.
