Off to Big Cat Country! - Kruger

Postby janis on Thu Nov 05, 2009 9:18 pm

Thanks for joining me again!

Satara is one of Kruger's largest camps, but still very quiet and laid back. Its terrain and game attract the big cats including cheetah, so we're hoping....

We drove by the leopard tree again, but he's found another big tree to nap in. Then we saw this weird bird. He's huge, and his calling in life is to eat insects or seeds or something out of elephant poop. The bird has to be big, because so is elephant poop! He takes his big beak and slings it around in that stuff looking for whatever! He must be finding something tasty, cause he keeps doing it! He's called a ground hornbill.

Image

I forgot my glasses, and had to go back to Orpen. Good thing! We saw another leopard lying in the grass, but he was pretty far off, so we moved on. We headed off to the ''Lion Road'', but the lions of yesterday have moved on. No matter! We're seeing so many elephants, zebras, giraffe, and everything else.

Arachnophobs...warning! Huge spider web coming up....

And these young giraffe play fighting

This young giraffe was looking really cute, standing right beside Mom, but he managed to allude our shutters..

We both found the giraffe to be hard to photograph. They either have their heads poked up into the leaves of a tall tree, or up against the bright sky. They're pretty snobbish, too. Just when you get your best shot, they turn their up nose and walk off!

We have a tasty lunch at the camp cafe by a lovely garden, full of all kinds of colorful birds. They're pretty quick, so I get only a few shots.

We spend the afternoon in awe all of the animals we are seeing, and head back to camp before we get locked out! Turns out, there's a great sunset watching spot right by the gate.

Arriving back at camp, we sign up for a night drive tomorrow night and an early morning drive for the next day, and then enjoy our porch sitting again. They should put rocking chairs on those porches!

Stay Tuned!

Great report and photos Janis. Love the ostrich and all the colorful birds. That baby giraffe is adorable. Must have been cool to watch the young giraffes play fighting. Beautiful sunset!

Another winning trip report! Those ground hornbills are not the prettiest of the hornbill species, but they are an impressive sight. The shot of the croc in the grass is pretty cool and I love the sunset. Great photos all around!

Janis - another great report. I love watching giraffes, they're surprisingly graceful. I'm not sure if you were looking for ids on the 2 small birds. The second one is a Burchell's Starling but I'm not sure about the first. It looks like a Barbet but I'm not great at the birds other than the ones you see all the time there. Nice viewing of the Southern Ground Hornbills.

Cool collection of critters. That hornbill's mouth is full of something. From your description of its eating habits I can only guess what it might be. That looks like some kind of woodpecker and what a stunning sunset.

So many great things to see, even from your porch. What a fantastic trip.

I photographed an identical woodpecker species in Tanzania. I think it's a Bennett's woodpecker.

Thanks for your comments, Ya'll!

Tom, unfortunately, we didn't see any cheetah - Had several ''you just missed the cheetah'' moments! Nor did we see wild dog! But, that's OK - don't need too many excuses to go back, but those are two good ones!

Thanks, Rachel, for the bird ID. Have you seen any of those violet-backed starlings? I was hoping to see some, but didn't. Who would've thought that starlings could be so pretty?

Max, I thought the woodpecker to be a bennett's woodpecker, too, so thanks for confirming that. There are several that are similar, but the solid stripe on his cheek is the distinguishing mark, I think.

I've seen a female violet backed starling but not a male. I've never seen the woodpecker you saw either. On past trips I haven't been as into the birds but a couple of my friends on this most recent trip were birders so we spent a little more time on them. Still most of my bird photos from Africa are of the Lilac Breasted Rollers, Hornbills, Storks, Vultures and Cranes. Keep the reports coming. By the way, you've inspired me to go back through my photos and process some more. Thanks
