injured moose; trip report day 1

Postby beanp on Thu Jun 04, 2009 5:42 pm

We arrived in Gardiner late Wednesday afternoon, too tired and hungry to go into the park after 15 hours of flying and driving! So we drove into the park for the first time this morning at about 5:45 AM! (arghh!) Not much to report except wolves (probably Druids) at scoping distance in Lamar. We did see a black wolf cross the road, wander a bit and then re-cross the road back up the hill. At that point Ranger Rick came by and I asked about the injured moose. He told me how to find her (and her calf!!) and said she was not always visible but usually in the area. We drove up toward the Trout Lake parking area and lo and behold there she was! We saw a big bull moose about half a mile back toward Roosevelt but didn't (couldn't) stop for pictures.

The good news is that I can say that as of late this morning she was alive and her calf seemed to be doing just fine. I cannot say she was "well", though....although from what people said she had improved a lot (!!) over the last few days. She must have had one heck of a fight with whatever attacked her...and what a story that she even survived!

When we fist saw her she was lying down with her head up looking around, and the calf was alseep, barely discernable on the ground as a little mound of light brown fluff. Things got interesting when the calf got up ...

and wanted to feed. After a minute or so, the mother got up...

She walked, followed by the calf, down the hill a little ways and into and across a small stream. The calf seemed to try (just by copying its mother?) to eat grass or other vegetation, but we wondered if calves a week or less old can eat grass? Eventually the mother crossed the road (!) in spite of the small crowd and the cars. She returned half way across the road when the calf was a bit afraid, but eventually calf and mother walked slowly up the hill, roughly northwestward. The problem....northwestward was back toward Roosevelt and the whole Druids, which were quite active this morning having killed an elk late yesterday. We, those of us standing watching the moose, did not want her to go up toward the wolves.

Maybe she understood, or maybe she smelled or sensed danger, because before she got to the top of the ridge, she stopped and turned around and came back down the hill at a bit faster clip than she had done on the way up! The calf follwed her back down across the road, and they had a nice get-together moment...

A little while later, they ended up just about where they had started, lying down just in front of a downed log about 150 feet from the road...

After that we had a first: we started our own jam!!! We were the first to see a hawk on the ground not far from the road chowing down on something uinknown...

The hawk ended up in a narby aspen (?) tree and cleaned off its beak...

And finally we saw a coyote running down the road following the center line pretty well...

And that was all before about 2 PM! All in all an interesting day, we thought.

More tomorrow ....

What an awesome tale of survival! I'm pulling for them! Love your shots and narrative! The hawk is neat, too! They are pretty hard to photograph, I think!
Rest up! Looking forward to more!

So nice seeing the moose family out in the open. I think the first shot's my favorite.

Great report and shots Keith. If she made it across the road and up the hill, she is indeed doing better than last week when she could barely stand up. Glad Mom and baby are progressing.

Oh, the tenderness in that first photo of the moose cow and calf!

They've become celebrities. :D

Well photographed.

Great pictures and experience!
The moose and baby have a lot of people pulling for them. What a story there must be to her injuries.

Terrific report! I am really pleased by the improvement in the mother moose's condition. From what I heard it sounded as if she was all but gone that first day. Those pictures are great, and some very tender moments between a mother and baby. Thanks for sharing!

Great photos and wonderful update. I know we shouldn't get too emotionally attached to these animals because as previous posts have shown nature is very unforgiving, but how can you not pull for these two :D

Thanks for the report and photos. In 14 days we will be off. I hope we are as lucky as you to spot so much wildlife on the first day.

Great report & wonderful images. Love all your photos, but the first one is my favorite, too. What an amazing story. :) Thanks for bringing us up to date. I sure hope they make it.
