Trip Report June 19th-26th (PHOTOS ADDED)

Postby drucker on Wed Jun 30, 2010 4:03 pm

This is was my fist summer trip. I’ve been visiting Yellowstone for over 10 years. I usually visit in May or late September/early October. I wanted to see the park when everything was green and warm. The weather was in the upper sixties and low seventies! There were some brief storms buy plenty of sunshine the rest of the week.

I was not expecting to see many bears this time of year but I saw more during this trip than any of my other trips. I lost track of the number of adult black bears (around 30) Every part of the park I visited I saw at least one black bear sometimes 2 or 3 within a couple of miles of each other. I saw 8 adult grizzly bears (one in the Tetons). Also 6 cubs (the griz with 4 and the Washburn griz with 2)

I also saw tons of other wildlife including a pronghorn with 2 fawns (Slough Creek), bull and cow moose (Silver Gate), Mountain Goat (roadside HWY 191 north of park),Red Foxes, and of course plenty of Elk, Bison, and Sheep. I also saw what I think is a Pine Marten near Canyon (I will post a photo for ID confirmation)

I will upload photos soon. I took over 1300 during the week and still sorting thru them. I had planned to post daily trip reports but the summer days are very long. By the time I made it back at night I was ready for bed to start over early the next morning.

The only bad part of a summer trip was that around 11 am every day there was a lot of traffic in the park. I usually hiked in the afternoons to avoid. I took my first hike to Mystic Falls. This is now my favorite waterfall in the park.

Below are some of my favorite photos. See all the photos at my website: http://www.donrucker.com/yellowstone-june-2010

Hey Don,
I wondered if you were going to make it to the park this year. By the sounds of your trip report you did great, I can't wait to see the photos.

Chris

P.S. If you can't remember who I am, we ran into the bat at Trout Lake last year

Don, wonderful photos. Do you have any idea what kind of critter this is?

I can't think of any other way to identify this photo.

It's a pine marten. What a find!

Don, I'm not sure who told you not to expect bears in June... that's probably the best month for black bears especially. ;) Glad you got some good grizz action too.

Congrats on the bears and the marten!

That black bear cub on the carcass looks familiar. Was this the one that was "fighting" with the coyote on the elk carcass near tower? Excellent images.

Great collection of critters. You really made the hairs of that moose stand up when it saw you! :D
